STAR Lighting Surveys
During the Sea Turtle nesting and hatching season nighttime surveys are performed on area beaches by volunteers to evaluate artificial lighting that could cause disorientations. Artificial lighting that can be seen from the beach is ranked by severity. A light visible on the beach would be ranked 1, light casting shadows on the beach would be a 2 and light illuminating the beach would be a 3. This information is tracked and feedback given to the owner or manager of the property as a means of helping correct the lighting problem.
Volunteers are always welcome and needed to make these nighttime walks, usually
just one night a week May through October.
This picture shows a marked turtle nest along with an umbrella left close to the nest. Beach equipment
should be moved well behind the dunes at night.
